Jobless to shovel snow and chop wood

Norway's Conservatives plan to make those receiving welfare payments do menial jobs like shovelling snow, chopping wood, and collecting rubbish, under a new plan to make the jobless work for their money.

"The very worst thing that can happen, especially for young people, is that you sit at home… and lose contact with the outside world," Torbjørn Røe Isaksen, the Conservative Party's social policy spokesman told Aftenposten. "We have duty to act."

Those who refuse the work, which will be provided by their local councils, will have money deducted from their welfare payments.

The policy was announced in conjunction with the Progress Party, which is likely to be part of a ruling coalition after the election.
