Norway protects ‘sea-sick’ crabs

Kjell Sørbø, nicknamed the "crab king", was one of the main tourist attractions in the far-Northern town of Kjøllefjord, until his tours were stopped by order of the authorities. 

 

"It is not natural for a crab to be exposed to strong light, heat and noise outside water. It can also be seasick during transport, it is quite well known," Robin Martinsen of the food standards body told NRK in May. "Crabs have feelings too, and like other animals they have the right to be treated properly." 

 

On Tuesday, Sørbø said his appeal against the decision had been rejected by the authority's headquarters in Bergen.
