Stoltenberg attacks right’s paternity quota plans

Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg has attacked the centre-right coalition's plans to end use-it-or-lose-it paternity leave during a head-to-head television debate with Progress Party leader Siv Jensen.

"Everybody knows that if we remove the pappa quota, it will be the mother who takes most of the leave," the Labour leader said.

Stoltenberg was countering Jensen's claim that only her party had faith in Norwegian men's willingness to take responsibility for looking after their young children.

He argued that removing the quota would undermine one of the fundamental purposes of Norway's parental leave system, which is to promote gender equality.
