While the EU food agency concluded earlier this year that the numbers of bees are tumbling due to man-made pesticides, a gang of Norwegians are doing their part to help bees get busy across Oslo.

"Bees aren't a part of the cities' fauna, but they are however important to have around, as they help with pollination,"  spokeswoman Anniken Røstad Jøssund told the NTB news agency on Friday. Similar urban bee-keeping initiatives exist in cities such as Copenhagen, Paris, San Francisco, and Hong Kong, to name but a few.

"It's also important that the bees have a good place to live," Jøssund added, stating that it was imperative to make sure to plant flowers nearby.

The Oslo beehives have been placed in the neighbourhoods of Sagene, Alna, Bjørvika, Rodeløkka and in Asker.
