A town in the southeast of Spain has broken the Guinness World Record for the biggest-ever group 'skinny dip' with 729 naked people baring all to get wet in the Mediterranean.

Disrobed dippers in Vera, in Andalusia's Almeria province, took the title by beating the previous record set by 506 bathers in New Zealand.

The local mayor, José Carmelo Jorge, described the event as a "tremendous success" and noted that he was "very satisfied" with the outcome.

Organizers had expected only "around 600 people" to take part in the costume-free fun, a figure that was easily exceeded, according to Spanish daily 20 Minutos.

The mayor told reporters the event had raised funds for a charitable cause and added the event had also served its purpose of helping to promote naturist tourism in the town.

Vera's mass skinny-dip was just one of the activities that took place across Spain on Sunday to mark the Day Without Swimsuits.

Organized by the Spanish Naturism Federation, the goal of the day was to promote tolerance for nudism on beaches.

The nudist beach at Vera also hosted an event of au naturel athleticism last Saturday with its first Nudist Fun Run.

Unrestricted runners competed over a 3.1km course through the streets of the town's El Playazo nudist zone.
