Italian gives birth to royal baby pizza

A pizzeria owner in Glasgow, Scotland, has created a picture pizza to mark the imminent arrival of Britain's royal baby. Domenico Crolla told The Local he hopes the baby will be called Margherita.

Domenico Crolla, the son of Italian immigrants, used an old picture of the birth of Prince William to come up with the image of Kate Middleton, the prince and their as yet unborn baby.

“I sketch on paper, then create a pizza, shape the cheese and make it in the oven. It takes 90 minutes to make so it’s pre-order only,” he told The Local.

“I think it’s good that the first picture of the couple with the baby was done by an Italian,” he added.

The Bella Napoli restaurant owner has been creating pizza pictures for around a year and a half. Crolla created a pontiff pizza to mark the arrival of Pope Francis at the Vatican earlier this year and has also crafted one of the British queen.

“This is something I couldn’t resist doing…I think the Royal family is good for the country, the economy and morale,” he said.

The royal baby pizza is proving to be popular worldwide, with notable interest from Australia and the US, although few Italians have shown an interest.

Crolla added that “Italians are suspicious of restaurants abroad” and were against restaurateurs getting attention for the national cuisine.

Kate Middleton, also known as the Duchess of Cambridge, went into labour on Monday.

The royal event has been a boost for betting shops, as the public make bets on the baby’s name.

Crolla said he has already decided on the best option: “It would be nice if it could be Diana but I don’t think it will be. If it’s a girl it’s got to be Margherita.”
