The Norwegian authorities detained the man for stealing, but a DNA test revealed that he had left traces behind in a reported rape case from May 2010. Among other forensic evidence, his DNA was found in scratches on the woman's body after the attack, which Norwegian media described as brutal.
The revelation means that three years on, the man will be charged with the rape on Friday, confirmed Oslo police spokeswoman Ann Kristin Grosberghaugen at the sex crimes division.
The man, who was 23 at the time of the attack, worked as a newspaper delivery boy in the residential Lørenneighbourhood, police spokeswoman Sturla Henriksbø told the Verdens Gang newspaper.
