Värmland District Court jailed the man for one year and ordered him to pay his former girlfriend 27,000 kronor ($4,000) in compensation, according to a report in the local Nya Wermlands Tidning daily.
The assault occurred in May in an apartment in the centre of Karlstad in western Sweden.
The court heard how the man first bashed his girlfriend’s head into the wall before putting out a cigarette on one of her teeth.
He furthermore stabbed a knife into the wall close to her hand and pulled a plastic bag over her head.
He completed the assault by threatening to kill her and warned not to call the police.
The man denied the offences but the court found the evidence sufficient to convict him for assault, aggravated threats and illegal abuse. The man was furthermore convicted for drugs offences.
During 2012 some 28,254 cases of violence against women were reported in Sweden, according to the Crime Prevention Council (Brottsförebyggande rådet, Brå).
The majority of assault cases involve men and women who know each other. Around 17 women are killed each year by men they have a close relation with.
