Brits hit by freak summer snow in Norway

A British couple holidaying in central Norway drove off the road over the weekend as a freak June snowfall rendered the roads near impassable in the Hardangervidda national park.

"They only manged to drive about 400 metres before they skidded off the road," camping site owner Kari Varberg told the local Bergens Tidende newspaper.

While local traffic authorities had sent out plows to deal with the snow that was dusting national route 7, which links eastern and western Norway, the British couple set out in their camper van before the route was cleared on Saturday.

While temperatures hovered around the zero degrees Celcius point over the weekend, camping site owner Varberg said she had never seen snow fall in the area in June before.
