The two black-clad men, one of them with a handgun, got into the Montfleury remand centre and made off with an undisclosed sum, said a Geneva police statement that did not provide further details.
The robbers escaped by motorbike across the nearby border with France, and Swiss authorities immediately alerted their French counterparts.
French police went in hot pursuit but lost track of them, later finding their abandoned motorbike.
No-one was injured during the raid on the jail, but the staff were left in shock, Geneva police said.
