Swiss diamond necklace ‘stolen’ at Cannes

A diamond necklace from Geneva jeweller De Grisogono worth 2.5 million francs was reported stolen from Cannes on Thursday, just days after thieves made off with 1.4 million francs' worth of bling from Chopard, another jeweller from the Swiss city.

De Grisogono announced that the necklace was stolen from the Hotel Eden-Roc in the resort town of Antibes, in the south of France.

“A necklace was stolen during the Cannes film festival and we are working with authorities,” a spokesman for the jeweller said, refusing to comment on the circumstances of the theft or the exact value of the necklace.

Police confirmed they were investigating a complaint filed by the Swiss jeweller and that a necklace had gone missing in Antibes, near Cannes.

France Info radio reported that the missing necklace was worth 1.9 million euros and had been stolen during a gala evening Tuesday at the chic Eden Roc hotel attended by, among others, Paris Hilton and Sharon Stone.

It is second high value theft to hit the Cannes festival in a matter of days.

On Friday thieves stole Chopard jewellery worth around 1.4 million francs from a safe in a room at the Novotel hotel.

In a scenario itself worthy of a movie, thieves entered the hotel room of an American woman employee of Chopard and ripped out the strongbox in the wardrobe, according to police reports.

A Chinese film producer blasted France for its “really bad” level of public safety after he was the victim of a burglary at this year's festival.

Zhang Qiang expressed his outrage on his blog just days after the apartment he was renting in the resort was targeted by thieves.

The vice president of the powerful state conglomerate China Film Company discovered the apartment he had hired out for the festival had been targeted when he returned home from dinner last Thursday.

Cannes Film Festival postponed to July due to Covid

The Cannes Film Festival has been rescheduled for July 6th to 17th - postponed by around two months due to the ongoing virus crisis, organisers said on Wednesday.

“As announced last autumn, the Festival de Cannes reserved the right to change its dates depending on how the global health situation developed,” they said in a statement.

“Initially scheduled from 11th to 22nd May 2021, the Festival will therefore now take place from Tuesday 6th to Saturday 17th July 2021.”

The festival was cancelled last year, while rival European events in Berlin and Venice went ahead under strict health restrictions.

The Berlin Film Festival, which usually kicks off in February, said last month it would run this year's edition in two stages, an online offering for industry professionals in March and a public event in June.

France has closed all cinemas, theatres and show rooms alongside cafés, bars and restaurants as part of its Covid-19 health measures and the government has pushed back their reopening date until further notice due to rising levels of viral spread across the country.

The Cannes festival normally attracts some 45,000 people with official accreditations, of whom around 4,500 are journalists.

It had only been cancelled once before, due to the outbreak of war in 1939.

Its Film Market, held alongside the main competition, is the industry's biggest marketplace for producers, distributors, buyers and programmers.

Last year, the festival still made an official selection of 56 films – including the latest offerings from Wes Anderson, Francois Ozon and Steve McQueen – allowing them to use the “Cannes official selection” label.
