Diamond necklace ‘worth €2m stolen’ at Cannes

Jewellery thieves have had some rich pickings at Cannes this year with jewellers announcing on Thursday that a €2million diamond De Grisogono necklace had been stolen, just days after €1.4 million worth of Chopard bling was pilfered.

High class Swiss jewellers De Grisogono announced on Thursday that a diamond necklace believed to be worth around €2 million was stolen from the Hotel Eden-Roc in the resort of Antibes, according to reports in the French media.

"A necklace was stolen during the Cannes festival and we are working with the authorities," a De Grisogono spokesman said, refusing to comment on the circumstances of the theft or exact value of the necklace.

Police said they were investigating a complaint filed by De Grisogono and that the necklace had gone missing in the resort town of Antibes near Cannes.

France Info radio reported that the missing diamond necklace was worth 1.9 million euros and had been stolen during a gala evening Tuesday at the chic Eden Roc hotel attended by, among others, Paris Hilton and Sharon Stone.

It is second high value theft to hit the Cannes festival in a matter of days.

On Friday thieves stole Chopard jewellery worth up to €1 million from a safe in a room at the Novotel hotel.

In a scenario itself worthy of a movie, thieves entered the hotel room of an American woman employee of Swiss bijoutier Chopard and ripped out the strongbox in the wardrobe, according to police reports.

A Chinese film producer blasted France for its “really bad” level of public safety after he was the victim of a burglary at this year's festival.

Zhang Qiang expressed his outrage on his blog just days after the apartment he was renting in the resort was targeted by thieves.

The vice president of the powerful state conglomerate China Film Company discovered the apartment he had hired out for the festival had been targeted when he returned home from dinner last Thursday.

Danish neighbourhood watches keep Christmas burglaries in check

The number of burglaries reported in Denmark this Christmas remained at the historic lows seen in 2022, with the country's Crime Prevention Council giving credit to its neighbourhood watch app.

Danish neighbourhood watches keep Christmas burglaries in check

Just 660 burglaries were reported between December 19th 2023 and January 1st 2024, more or less level with the 559 recorded the previous year.

This is a historically low level, with 1,343 burglaries reported over Christmas as recently as 2019, with the Nabohjælp app, a joint venture between the Crime Prevention Council and TrygFonden perhaps playing a role.

“There are many indications that the Danes have become very good at helping their neighbors during the holidays and also tricking burglars into thinking that someone is home in the many houses that have been empty during the Christmas holidays,” Julie Kofoed, communications consultant for Nabohjælp, said in a press release.

“Nabohjælp is about cooperation between neighbours, so that you make sure that each other’s homes are always kept an eye on.”

The app, which was launched by the Crime Prevention Council, together with the insurance company TrygFonden, has been downloaded by 270,000 people in Denmark, and its spin-off Nabovenner, or “neighbour friends”, numbers as many as 1,000 volunteers, who run networks of Nabohjælpere, or “neighbourhood helpers” in their areas.

“Neighbor friends are enthusiasts who promote neighborly assistance where they live,” Kofoed said. “We are convinced that Neighbor Friends play a decisive role in getting the neighborhood helpers activated, around the whole of Denmark and especially in the areas plagued by burglaries.”
