The 25-year-old man, who had spent the evening at a funfair near Hauneck in east Hesse, was spotted strolling down the train tracks in the early hours of Saturday.
Train drivers were alerted and told to slow down on the stretch between Kassel and Fulda. But before police could apprehend the man, one driver decided to take matters into his own hands.
Pulling up alongside the man, the driver stopped his ICE train and told him to hop in. He then courteously dropped the man off at his destination, where he was picked up by police awaiting his arrival.
“The [man] is probably the only person in the whole of Germany to have hitched a ride with an ICE,” said a police spokesman. “But a taxi would have certainly been much cheaper,” he added.
