New in German theatres this week is Tom Hooper’s “Les Misérables,” based on the long-running musical, which, in turn, is based on Victor Hugo’s famous book. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France in the throes of political upheaval, the film tells the story of Jean Valjean. After serving a harrowing prison sentence for stealing a loaf of bread, he seeks to lead a normal life. Hooper’s inspired decision to record vocals live on set elicited stunning performances from Hugh Jackman as Valjean along with Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Sacha Baron Cohen and others. Visually and vocally ambitious, “Les Misérables” is a dazzling take on Hugo’s epic tale.
