Man charged as woman dies after S&M sex game

A man from Umeå in northern Sweden has been charged with aggravated assault and manslaughter after the death of 28-year-old German woman during a violent S&M sex game.

The woman died in October and came to the attention of the authorities when the man called the emergency services, according to a report in the local Västerbottens-Kuriren newspaper.

When the ambulance arrived they found the woman unconscious and unable to breathe by herself. She was rushed to hospital where she was kept in intensive care for a couple of days before she was declared dead.

The man has now been charged with aggravated assault and manslaughter after it emerged that the woman’s injuries were sustained in a sadomasochistic sex game.

According to a pathologist’s report, the woman was hit at least 123 times with a paddle during their role play, sustaining injuries all over her body.

It has been concluded that the blows did not alone cause the woman’s death, with reports indicating that the pair had also consumed the drug ethylphenidate – a psychostimulant similar to cocaine.

The prosecutor Åsa Jönsson has confirmed that she believes the cause of death to be suffocation perhaps caused by restriction of the airways with a condom containing nylon tights.

The woman had previously spent time as an exchange student in Umeå where she met the 31-year-old Swede. The pair had maintained contact over Skype, and the man had visited her in Germany.

According to Västerbottens-Kuriren, the 28-year-old travelled to Sweden in mid-October to meet the man, whom she considered to be her boyfriend. Nine days later she was dead.

The trial is scheduled to begin next week and several witnesses are expected to feature in the court proceedings.
