Pregnant cow rescued after fall into septic tank

In an operation requiring all the delicacy of a surgical procedure, firemen in a Bern village succeeded in rescuing a pregnant cow after it fell into a septic tank on Wednesday.

The alert was sounded at around 7am when the cow tumbled into the tank on a farm in Dürrenroth, 30 kilometres northeast of the city of Bern.

Members of the Dürrenroth fire department arrived first at the scene and installed ventilation fans to blow away noxious gases from the sewage, the Berner Zeitung newspaper reported on its website.

This allowed firemen to safely attend to the messy work of attaching a harness to the animal so that it could be winched out.

Reinforcements arrived from the Bern Fire Department.

The cow had apparently fallen into the septic tank after a piece of grating had moved out of place.

That left the firemen with the challenge of lifting the cow through a narrow shaft opening of 52 by 71 centimetres, according to the Bern fire department.

A crane truck was used to extricate the burly animal from the place where it was trapped in an operation that took about an hour, the Berner Zeitung said.

No sooner had the rescuers started to wash down the exhausted cow with warm water and straw than it got up and appeared none the worse for wear, the newspaper reported.

A veterinarian on hand affirmed that the cow had escaped injury.

In addition to the vet, the rescue operation involved a total of 18 fire fighters.

Danish police shoot ‘aggressive’ cow after escape from abattoir

An “aggressive” cow was pursued and lethally shot by police in Aarhus after it broke free from an abattoir and caused temporary closure of the city’s light rail.

The Letbanen light rail was forced to briefly close after the cow, a heifer, escaped from Aarhus Slagterhal, an abattoir in the city.

The incident resulted in police shooting and killing the animal.

Police were informed of the escape just before 9am on Tuesday and sent a number of patrol vehicles to the city’s harbour area. The chase was over by 9:42, East Jutland Police wrote on Twitter.

The animal was described as “aggressive” and “potentially dangerous” by people who called police to report it, police said.

The animal was shot on the Østhavnsvej road at the harbour, police confirmed, but were unable to initially state the exact number of shots fired.

Knud Erik Nielsen, a manager at the abattoir, told broadcaster DR that the heifer was able to escape because of the temporary removal of a fence for works at the facility.

“I can’t remember when this last happened. The last time is certainly five to ten years ago,” Nielsen told DR Nyheder.
