Rescue services rushed to the scene after the pensioner’s wife, who had been standing nearby, reported that her husband had disappeared under the surface of the Storelva River.
The victim had been wading at the edge of the river when suddenly he went under. Police said they did not know why the tourist had lost his footing but noted that the death is not being treated as suspicious. His body was found at a depth of seven metres.
“The man was found relatively quickly by divers near the point where he fell in,” police spokesman Tor Egedahl told newspaper Sunnmørsposten.
A rescue helicopter, ambulance, divers and police were all dispatched to the scene after the incident was reported shortly after 10am.
