CAR ACCIDENT

Swedish teen killed in car crash

A 17 year-old boy died early on Sunday morning, after having been hit by a car outside the summer resort Båstad in southwestern Sweden.

The accident occurred on the night between Saturday and Sunday. The boy, originally from Stockholm, was walking home along a road together with some friends, attempting to hitchhike, when a car came driving in the other direction.

The driver didn’t see the group of pedestrians until it was too late, and hit two of them.

“The car was driving 70 kilometres an hour, it was dark and wet, and the driver had no chance to swerve,” said Helsingborg police officer Minna Friberg to the TT news agency.

The other boy who was hit by the car was also injured, and has been hospitalized, but reportedly did not sustain life-threatening injuries.

Several eye-witnesses were shocked.

When the accident occurred emergency services, police patrols and three ambulances quickly arrived on the scene, reported local newspaper Helsingborgs Dagblad (HD).

“We always try to take care of witnesses on the spot. We try to establish crisis management out there,” said Helsingborg fireman Christer Haraldsson to HD.

Police officers don’t suspect any crime.

German footballer killed day after club’s relegation

Having been relegated from the Bundesliga the day before, Hanover 96 were on Sunday mourning their midfielder Niklas Feierabend after the 19-year-old was killed in a car crash.

The youth team talent was only given a professional contract in February and had not made his debut in Germany's top flight.

“This morning we received the terrible news that our 19-year-old forward lost his life after a car crash in the early hours of this morning,” said the club in a statement on their website.

According to police, Feierabend was one of three backseat passengers who suffered fatal injuries when the car they were in left the road and hit a tree at 0545 (0345 GMT) on Sunday morning.

He had played for Hanover 96's youth team in a game against RB Leipzig on Saturday and Hanover's reserve team game on Sunday was called off out of respect for Feierabend's family.

Bottom side Hanover had their relegation from Germany's top flight confirmed on Saturday when they were beaten 3-1 at home by Schalke — their 22nd defeat in 32 league games.
