The Federal Office for Migration said 1.78 million foreigners were living in Switzerland at the end of April, an increase of 0.5 percent from last year.
The majority — 65 percent — hail from countries within the European Union as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
Most newcomers arrived from Portugal, with numbers rising by 12,337, while the number of Germans increased by 11,491.
Italians make up the biggest foreign community in Switzerland at 16.3 percent, followed by Germans, who constitute 15.6 percent and the Portuguese at 12.8 percent.
