ACCIDENT

Gothenburg road flushed away by leaking pipeline

Water from a leaking pipeling has flushed away a section of a road on Hisingen in Gothenburg. The ruined road is country road 155, connecting central Gothenburg with districts Torslanda and Öckerö.

The water suddenly burst through the tarmac around 9am Saturday morning.

“A woman who was driving by when it occurred described it as an explosion. There was a sudden bang on the road, and a whole lot of water flew up. She called emergency services immediately,” said the Swedish Transport Administration’s Kim Selland to news agency TT.

No one appears to have been injured by the blast, and no vehicles have been stuck in the floods of water.

“This is going to take some time to repair,” concluded Selland.

It currently seems likely that the road will remain closed for a significant period of time, which is going to make traffic to and from Torslanda and Öckerö a headache.

The leak is near Volvo Car’s factory in Torslanda.

According to emergency services, the leaking pipe is probably large.

“It seems to be under the road, between lanes. The water just keeps coming, up from the ground so to speak, Roy Dibén of Gothenburg’s emergency services explained to TT.

Police are now re-directing traffic to other roads in the area.
