Volunteering in English opens donations page

“Every little donation leads to a big difference,” project leader Claire Thomas told The Local.

The project launched the online crowd-funding programme on Monday, in which people can donate to the project through a web-based social media platform.

The aim is to gather enough funding to create the English subsection of the Swedish agency, Volontärbyrån, on its already existing website.

“People shouldn’t think that their donation of 100 kronor ($15) wouldn’t help and therefore not bother – if just 800 people donated 100 kronor then we’d meet our target!,” Thomas said.

She was quick to add, however, that people wanting to donate even more are very welcome indeed.

She told The Local that the fundraising campaign was set up through the “Funded by me” website, which uses social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter in order to spread a message quickly through sharing.

Thomas, an British woman who claims to have volunteering “in her blood”, is keen to stress the benefits of the project for those who are participating as volunteers.

“We believe that the feeling that comes from doing something for someone else should be available to everyone,” wrote Thomas on the site.

“Volunteering is not only a great way to help make the world a better place, but also to meet people, gain work experience, learn about Sweden, learn Swedish, get out of the house, feel useful and have fun.”
