Inmates tortured prisoner with potato peeler

Four inmates at a Swedish prison are suspected of using a television set, a broken plate, and a potato peeler to "torture" a fellow prisoner as part of an attempted extortion scheme.

The victim of the attack, which took place at the Skänninge prison in Mjölby in central Sweden, suffered repeated kicks to the head and torso as part of an attempt by fellow inmates to get him to hand over 95,000 kronor ($14,000).

On one occasion, the gang of four prisoners beat their victim with a television set, Sveriges Television (SVT) reported.

According to prosecutors, the prisoners carried out their torture-like violence by trapping the victim in his cell for hours at a time.

As part of their scheme, the inmates stabbed their fellow prisoner on several occasions, using a range of items, including a scissors, a potato peeler, and a can opener.

They also cut the prisoner using a broken plate and a razor blade.

“It’s very unusual for such serious violence to take place here,” prison head Gert-Arne Sköld told the Expressen newspaper.

“On the other hand, it’s not uncommon at other Swedish prisons.”

On Tuesday, prosecutor Marianne Staaf formally charged four men and one woman, aged 27 to 47, with attempted aggravated robbery and being an accessory to blackmail.

According to the indictment, the woman’s involvement in the incident entailed her having delivered a threat to a third party over the phone.

Intern at German prison faces hefty bill after sending photo of master key to friends

A man on a work placement at a prison in the state of Brandenburg was immediately dismissed from his internship after sending friends a photo of the prison's master key via the messenger service WhatsApp.

The man now faces paying a bill of up to €50,000 after Brandenburg’s justice ministry had to pay for the immediate replacement of 600 locks in the prison, Bild newspaper reports.

A photograph of a key could provide enough information for a skilled locksmith to be able to replicate it, leading the prison to fear that keys could be smuggled through to the inmates.

The justice department received a tip off that the intern had shared a picture of the master key for the JVA Heidering prison at the end of February. “A large number of cells and corridor doors had to have their locks changed,” a spokesman told Bild.

Some twenty prison guards worked into the early hours of the following morning to ensure that all the locks were changed.

The prison is situated just outside the city boundaries of Berlin on the southwestern edge of the capital.

“The internship ended with immediate effect and the intern was issued with a ban on entering the building,” the spokesperson said.
