VALENTINE'S DAY

Valentine’s Day in Sweden – readers’ sweet tweets and love stories

So far this year, The Local has seen its fair share of love stories, both sweet and scary.

Valentine's Day in Sweden - readers' sweet tweets and love stories

A 150-year-old love letter was found in a field in southern Sweden in January, a cannibal fell in love with a vampire behind bars two weeks ago, and a Swedish twitter sex hashtag (could we call that love?) took the world by storm a month ago.

Another heart warming love story from The Local’s recent archives was the long lost but not forgotten wedding ring which turned up on a carrot in a Swedish couple’s garden.

To mark the occasion, some of our readers have also shared their sweet tweets, funny messages and love stories with us:

“I met my Prince Charming within the computer game, Everquest, in 2002. Thomas and I were just friends for about 5 years as we daily fought dragons and other “baddies”, along with other friends of ours in our virtual world.

In 2007 some of us from the game met in Wales for a weekend, just to see who we’d been spending our time with.

From that weekend on Thomas and I knew we wanted to be together in the real world, not just the virtual.

After a long drawn-out legal process (fighting the dragons of red tape and misinformation) I was officially granted a permit to live in Sweden.

We were married August 8, 2009 and the rest has been a dream come true, a wonderful life with my Swedish husband, this side of the monitor screen.”

Svenska För Invandrare sent me a Valentine’s card – It contained a preposition of marriage.

“It all started at Stureplan. An open-air pub, me, two Majas and three ‘stor stark’.

I assumed they had agreed to take me out as a favour to a friend. At worst, it would be an awkward memory from my this bumbling American’s summer in Stockholm; at best, I might nearly double my then non-existent network of Swedish friends – male or female.

It wasn’t until later that night I began plotting how I might arrange another rendezvous with the Maja who hadn’t made sure to emphasize the fact that she had a boyfriend.

The foul smelling night bus to our shared corner of suburban Stockholm wasn’t exactly screaming ‘romance’ as I mustered up the courage to ask Maja on a second date.

But, as I learned at university, stale beer and vomit (not ours, mind you) have a curious, affection-inducing power.

Despite the stench, Maja agreed to see me again.

And while today, more then ten years on, we still find ourselves in that same Stockholm suburb, we don’t plan on taking the night bus home after our Valentine’s Day dinner in the city.”

“I met my Viking in Azeroth (a land in world of warcraft) I was “lovie” and he was “battlechief”  our friendship blossomed over raids, quests and battles, and eventually he persuaded me to come and visit him in Sweden.

My Viking decided the best way to introduce me to Sweden was to drive from Stockholm to Boden, it is very lucky that we enjoyed each others’ company as the only thing to look at was forest.

Despite the freezing cold, the long drive and the 1000 km of forest our feelings grew. Each day I fall a little bit more in love with my Viking and with the help of thermal underwear I am slowly falling in love with Sweden, the country that is now my home.

Happy valentines day Battlechief, With love from your Lovie xxx

@chilldivine

Just sent a pitch for a comedy about Swedish love to SVT… that’s as romantic as I’m getting this week!

@TheUppsalaKoala

I gave my girlfriend a ring last Valentine’s Day… but she never picked up. Hopefully this year I have more luck.
