Seven films in French ‘Oscars’ nominations

Nominations for the French equivalent of the Oscars, the Césars, were announced on Friday, with hot Oscar favourite 'The Artist' receiving fewer nominations than two other films.

“Polisse” and “L’exercice de l’Etat” scored 13 and 11 nominations respectively. “The Artist”, which has already picked up three Golden Globe awards and ten Academy Award nominations, also picked up ten César nominations.

“Polisse” is a drama that centres on the Paris Child Protection Unit and a photographer who is assigned to cover it. It won the jury prize at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.

“L’exercice de l’Etat” (known outside France as “The Minister”) tells a story of political intrigue between a minister and his chief of staff.

Other films to be nominated include the runaway box office favourite of 2011, “Intouchables” (Untouchables), which became the second most successful French film ever. The most popular French film of all time is “Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis” (Welcome to the sticks).

The César Academy nominated a total of seven films, rather than the usual five, to “better reflect the richness of French film” said Alain Terzian, the academy’s president.

The awards will be given on February 24th in Paris, just two days before the Oscars are handed out in Los Angeles.

Artist star to host Cannes opening

Berenice Bejo, co-star of the hit French silent movie "The Artist", is to host the Cannes Film Festival's opening and closing ceremonies next month, the event's chairman said on Wednesday.

Gilles Jacob confirmed reports that the 35-year-old actress, who won a César award at home as well as an Oscar nomination for her part in the black-and-white movie, will be mistress of ceremonies in the Riviera city on May 16 and 27.

Cannes organisers are to announce the 20-odd films in the official competition at a press conference in Paris on Thursday, with just under a month to go before the world’s top movie showcase.

Jacob had planned to announce Bejo’s role on Thursday, but Twitter had been abuzz since the French newspaper Le Parisien reported she could host the event.

“This kind of announcement would normally be made by institutions, rather than by agents,” he told AFP. “But her smile is sure to win everyone over,” he said – insisting he was not upset by the leak.

The French actress – who was born in Argentina and speaks fluent Spanish as well as English – is married to “The Artist” director Michel Hazanavicius, who swept this year’s Oscars with five awards including Best Picture.

Bejo owes her international breakthrough to the film.

Recent Cannes ceremony hosts include Kristin Scott Thomas, Monica Bellucci, Diane Kruger and, last year, the French actress Melanie Laurent.
