The 83-year-old was on her way to a family Christmas party at her daughter’s early on Friday afternoon, when the snowmobile fell through the ice at the Piteälven water works.
When the pensioner failed to turn up at the house, her family became worried and her son decided to try and find her. Eventually he found her and desperately fought to save the woman’s life as he waited for help from the emergency services. When they did arrive at the scene it was too late.
“The ice was so thin that her son could not pull her up out of the water, but he did manage to make sure she did not disappear under the ice. There is a strong current at the site”, Kjell Mattsson of the Arjeplog emergency services, told local reporters.
They received the alarm at 12pm and arrived an hour.later, but even though they managed to keep her alive for a short while it became impossible to revive her.
“Where she went through, it was thin. It’s been a very bad Autumn and we have very bad ice”, said Ulf Lundström, head of the local rescue service, to Expressen.se
