But the TV tower, a favourite with tourists for its East German kitsch and revolving restaurant at the top, will remain open while the work is carried out, the Berliner Zeitung daily reported at the weekend.
More than €1 million has been set aside for the work, said Christina Aue, manager of the tower.
“The last big renovation was 15 years ago. But the expectations of the guests have increased. We will now create a smarter atmosphere and provide more comfort,” she told the paper.
All visitor areas, such as the foyer and both viewing areas up at the top, around 200 metres in the air, will be rebuilt and modernised.
The tower, which was opened on October 3, 1969, and is visited by around 1.2 million people a year, has listed building status which restricts how much it can be altered.
“The character of the tower will be retained. But everything will be more modern, and a touch more elegant,” said Aue.
