“We want to discuss together how to find the right minimum wage,” von der Leyen told the Hamburger Abendblatt on Monday. Von der Leyen belongs to the senior coalition partner the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), while Niebel is part of the Free Democratic Party (FDP).

“What is important is that we get minimum wages organized by the market economy, not dictated by politicians,” she said.

Niebel had called previously for all minimum wages to be assessed by commissions, a suggestion that met with approval from the CDU’s employee’s interest group in parliament, chaired by Marcus Weinberg.

“For me it’s up for debate whether a commission or a time-wage-oriented tariff is used to decide wage boundaries, as long as a tariff-free zone doesn’t lead to low wages and as long as people feel they are being paid fairly and sufficiently for good work,” Weinberg told the paper.
