The experimental film about the late German choreographer Pina Bausch is the first documentary to represent Germany in the race for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
The film, which premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in February, has been a sleeper hit in Germany, earning $6 million (€4.3 million) since its release.
On January 24, 2012 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will decide which of the many foreign nominations will be among the five finalists for the Oscar, awarded a month later on February 26.
Germany has won the gong for best foreign film three times, most recently with the Stasi drama “The Lives of Others.”
“Pina,” which has already won numerous awards in Germany, combines interviews and archival material with dance routines, often set against the backdrop of the industrial city of Wuppertal, where Bausch worked for many years.
The film is slated for release in the United States in December, just ahead of the Oscar season.
