Oliver Kahn fined for tax evasion on fancy clothes from Dubai

The district court in Landshut confirmed on Thursday that the 41-year-old had been found guilty the previous day and fined.

Kahn had failed to register the clothes, worth nearly €7,000, at customs when he returned to Munich from a shopping trip in Dubai, the court spokesman confirmed.

“He had clothing and cufflinks worth not quite €7,000,” said the spokesman.

This should have attracted an import tax bill of around €2,000 – compensating for the lack of value-added-tax charged in Dubai. But Kahn avoided customs officers as he left the airport, using the ‘nothing to declare’ exit.

“He used the wrong exit. Then he was waved out of the line and then the goods were found,” said the spokesman.

Kahn was given a fine of 50 days of earnings – the court case was to decide how much that would be. Prosecutors had applied for him to be fined a total of €350,000, but the court reduced this to €125,000 – a day rate of €2,500.

Kahn’s management would not comment on the case.
