Beate Uhse looks to 3-D porn for salvation

Flagging German sex shop chain Beate Uhse said this week it would embrace 3-D porn movies to boost limp sales.

Financial news agency Bloomberg reported that the Flensburg-based company has seen profits from hardcore sex films squeezed in recent years amid a surfeit of free pornography online. Whereas x-rated movies accounted for three quarters of revenues 15 years ago, they have since plunged to only 17 percent.

“The sale of erotic movies on DVD fell within a few years from top to flop because of the surprisingly fast emergence of free porn on the internet,” Serge van der Hooft, the firm’s Chief Operating Officer, told Bloomberg.

But he cautioned Beate Uhse’s multidimensional sex offensive was still in a test phase: “We need to see how people will react to things coming at them in a 3-D porn movie.”

The chain has already started selling a 3-D version of “Octopussy,” a James Bond porn parody starring Danny Mountain. But with three-dimensional skin flicks costing upwards of €300,000 a pop, it remains to be seen if horny technology fans will be willing to spend around €70 per movie for the pleasure of supporting cutting-edge porn.

Named after its intrepid post-war birth control pioneer Beate Uhse, the company has struggled to stay profitable since 2006 and is forecasting a loss this year.

Bloomberg also reported that Beate Uhse’s hundreds of sex shops across Europe have had trouble repositioning themselves as purveyors of erotic lifestyle products as more people shop for sex toys like vibrators online.
