The unnamed 53-year-old, convicted of multiple rape and bodily harm charges in the 1970’s, reportedly attacked a photographer in the southern Hamburg district where he was living on Thursday. Hours later, local residents demonstrated against his presence.
Following the incident, police immediately found new housing for the man – the second time the man had been forced to move in the past few days.
The man from the southern state of Baden-Württemberg had been released in mid-July after a ruling by the higher regional court in Karlsruhe. On his own request, he was first housed in Bad Pyrmont in the state of Lower Saxony, and then moved to Hamburg.
According to the files, he expressly asked to be kept in prison in order to be prepared for his release. It is not yet clear why his request was ignored, the Hamburger Abendblatt newspaper reported.
