Detectives investigating the kidnapping and killing of Maria Bögerl may launch mass DNA testing in the Heidelheim region after a post-mortem examination found traces of another person on her body.

Weekly magazines Der Spiegel and Focus both report that the exact time of death has yet to be determined, but that the traces of DNA found on Bögerl’s body could be helpful.

Investigators have already said the man who called to demand money from Bögerl’s husband, a local banker, was local, with a strong regional accent.

The 54-year-old woman was kidnapped from her home on May 12. A subsequent attempt to hand over €300,000 failed, and her body was found not far from the hand-over spot, on June 3.

Der Spiegel said that the DNA traces recovered from her body were, however, of poor quality and could make comparisons difficult to make.

A 36-year-old man died from his injuries at the scene, while a 23-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where he later died, police said on Saturday evening.

Both of the victims were Ukrainian citizens who lived in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district, police said.

The same evening, police arrested a 57-year-old suspect – said to be a Russian national – who lives near the crime scene.

The 57-year-old is now being investigated on suspicion of murder.

“The exact course of events, background and motive are now the subject of the criminal investigation,” the police said.

The public prosecutor’s office has applied for a warrant for the suspect’s arrest.
