Alliance coalition pulls ahead of opposition: poll

If it were an election today the four government parties would lay claim to 49.2 percent of the vote against 47.4 for the opposition parties, according to the survey published in the Expressen daily.

The biggest loser in the latest poll, which goes against all recent indicators, is the Green Party which has fallen 2.5 percentage points to 8.8 percent. Furthermore the far-right Sweden Democrats have dropped back below their 2006 election result, to 2.1 percent (down 1.1 points on the previous Demoskop poll).

All the fluctuations are however within the margin of error for polling data.

The survey covers a period when the opposition have enjoyed a large amount of media exposure with the presentation of their shadow budget and worker’s day showpiece event, and the Social Democrat spokesperson Ibrahim Baylan has described the results as “alarming”.

The Moderate party secretary Per Schlingmann meanwhile described the news as “very pleasing”.

“This gives positive energy and a real vitamin injection to the whole of the centre-right,” he said in a comment to Expressen.

Demoskop interviewed 1,006 people during the period April 28th to May 5th.

The previous Demoskop poll published on April 10th painted a very different picture with the left-green opposition enjoying an 8.7 point lead on 52.4 percent. The Alliance government parties meanwhile polled 43.7 percent.

The Swedish general election will be held on Sunday September 19th.
