Andersson has a separated left shoulder that could endanger his place on the Swedish team during the upcoming 2010 Olympics.
The Senators announced late on Saturday that Alfredsson will join a huge injury list for the National Hockey League club, possibly missing every game until the NHL’s February break for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
The 37-year-old right wing figures to be a stalwart on the Swedish team and should be back in time for the Olympics, but his longest recovery time would bring him back barely a week before the Olympic final roster deadline.
Sweden’s provisional Olympic roster was set for a Sunday release with Alfredsson almost certain to be among the selections but with his condition for the global showdown for gold likely to be weakened by his lengthy absence.
While Alfredsson’s fate is unknown, Detroit’s Henrik Zetterberg and Niklas Kronwall are expected to get the call for the Swedish Olympic hockey team, along with Daniel and Henrik Sedin, star defender Nicklas Lidstrom and goaltender Henrik Lundqvist.
