Christmas chocolate thieves caught red handed

While many a Swedish Christmas office party end in hangovers and bad judgement, the holiday revelry of one company from Växjö in southern Sweden ended with a night in jail after a chocolate robbery gone wrong.

A group of drunken partygoers from Småland were discovered to be behind the theft of several boxes of chocolate from a store in central Helsingborg. Several witnesses saw five individuals take 16 Christmas baskets filled with chocolate, which were worth a total of 3,000 kronor ($415).

The investigation led police to the hotel where the group was staying. Police obtained a warrant and a search revealed that the missing chocolate had been stashed in several of their hotel rooms.

After the suspected thieves were transported to the police station, four of the five suspects were released after admitting to the crime. Only the boss, who was incredible intoxicated and continued to deny the charges, remained in custody.

“He eventually admitted to the crime and was later released,” Göran Hassel, information officer for the Skåne police, told Smålandsposten newspaper.
