Gloomy and heavy cloud cover will set in on Thursday, with rain in western and southern Germany. Residents at the foothills of the Alps will likely see enduring and heavy rainfall. Temperatures will top out between five and 10 degrees Celsius.
Overnight the snowfall line will sink to 1,000 metres in most of the country, but plummet all the way to 300 metres in eastern Germany, the DWD said. Lows will hover between six degrees and freezing.
Friday morning will dawn with more cloud cover and snowfall in the east. The Alpine foothills could meanwhile suffer more rain. Temperature highs will remain between two degrees in the snowy east and eight degrees in the west with brisk winds.
The clouds will be a bit patchier on Saturday in the north and west, but snowfall and rain are expected as temperatures drop to between -1 and five degrees in the Rhineland. Residents in the mountains can expect frost.
