Bakers cook up campaign to fight domestic violence

Bakers in the state of Hesse announced on Saturday they were fighting domestic violence by handing out 700,000 bread bags adorned with a slogan encouraging women to speak up on the taboo topic.

The slogan, “Violence doesn’t come in a bag,” intends to make the point that violence in the home must not hushed up, said the head of the Hessian Bakers’ Association, Wolfgang Schäfer, at the launch of the campaign.

Some 150 bakers, who have about 350 stores between them, are taking part in the campaign. The program is being supported by a coalition of Hessian womens’ groups.

Domestic violence was too often hidden from public view, Schäfer said. Many abused women did not dare talk about their suffering and did not know to whom they could turn.

Telephone numbers for information and counselling services are printed on the backs of the bread bags.

“So it’s as easy as possible to overcome inhibitions,” Schäfer said.

He estimated the bags would probably all be used within two to three weeks.
