The girl was playing in a sandpit at a playground in central Sandviken when it is thought she was lured into a nearby apartment by a unknown man. She was later found by her mother visibly shaken and confused.
Police now suspect that the three-year-old was subjected to rape in the apartment before being released onto the street. An investigation has been opened into the incident which occurred on Wednesday evening.
“When children are small we always have to assume the worst,” said Jan Friberg at Sandviken police to local newspaper Arbetarbladet.
The three-year-old girl has been examined by a doctor and has been taken back to the area around the playground in order to try to establish where she was taken.
The newspaper writes that due to the girl’s young age it has been impossible to interview her.
Police have opened an investigation into the suspected rape of a minor and are awaiting the results of tests on samples taken from the girl.
Jan Friberg underlined that the definition of rape is broad and was unwilling to specify as to the basis of the police suspicions.
