SVT faces new cuts

Swedish Television Head Eva Hamilton warns of new spending cuts, despite ongoing cutbacks totalling hundreds of millions of kronor, reports Dagens Nyheter. Hamilton has outlined the broadcasting company’s parlous financial situation in a letter to the Ministry of Culture.

STV’s expensive drama productions are at risk, news programmes may have to be curtailed and an overall downsizing of all programming is on the cards. Extensive new cutbacks are expected in 2012.

“All that will be left in the end are the basic services we are required to provide under our broadcasting licence,” says Eva Hamilton to Dagens Nyheter.

Although funds exist, they are kept in a separate, so-called “rundradio” account, the balance of which represents a surplus from collected TV licence fees. As such they are not accessible either by SVT or Swedish Radio.
