“Let us work together to find solutions for the great challenges of our time starting from the solid German-American relationship that has closely and amicably connected us,” he wrote in an official letter of congratulations to the new secretary of state.

He said important points for cooperation will be conflict in the Middle East, climate change, Iran’s nuclear programme and the financial crisis.

Clinton’s place in Obama’s cabinet was confirmed by the US Senate on Wednesday, one day after Obama was sworn in as the country’s 44th president.

Steinmeier wished Clinton “much strength, courage and the best of success,” in his letter, adding that he hoped to meet with her soon to offer his support her in the struggle to overcome hatred, violence, lawlessness and despair in the world.
