Fredrik Reinfeldt’s Moderate party continues to increase its support however, while the Christian Democrats contract further.
The tripartite opposition claimed 49.9 percent of the electorate in the Skop poll, while the four-party Alliance coalition languished on 44.6 percent. While this indicates a greater gap on the previous Skop poll it is a long way from the 10 percentage point lead enjoyed by the opposition in January 2008.
The Moderate party has benefited strongly from the rumbling financial crisis and now has the support of 27 percent of the electorate, an increase on the election in 2006. A recent separate Demoskop poll puts the Moderates on 31.5 percent.
The Christian Democrats meanwhile declined by 1.6 points and are now on 4.3 percent. The Demoskop poll puts the party on only 2.5 percent, below the threshold for claiming parliamentary seats.
The far-right Sweden Democrats had the support of 3.4 percent of the electorate according to the Skop poll and 2.5 percent according to Demoskop.
The Skop survey was conducted between December 11th 2008 and January 7th 2009 and asked 1,000 people which party they would vote for if there were election today.
