Boy dies after falling through ice

A five-year-old boy died after he and two companions fell through the thin ice covering a pond in the German state of Lower Saxony on Sunday.

The children were playing near the water in the town of Aurich, but the cold temperatures of recent days hadn’t formed a sheet of ice strong enough to hold them, according to police.

Residents had heard the cries for help after the children plunged into the freezing water and were able to rescue two of them. But the boy had to be retrieved by police divers and he died later in the hospital.
