“Yoichiro Nambu will not be coming,” Michael Sohlman who heads the foundation, told a press conference.
Asked why Nambu would not be making the trip, Sohlman said only that his advanced age made him unable to travel to Stockholm.
Born in 1921 in Japan, Nambu won his Nobel on October 7th along with Makoto Kobayashi and Toshihide Maskawa for their revolutionary work on the nature of subatomic particles and how they move.
At the formal ceremony in Stockholm on December 10th, the Nobel laureates will all receive a gold medal and a diploma, as well as 10 million kronor ($1.2 million) that can be split between up to three winners per prize.
Nambu will receive half of the Physics prize money, while his two Japanese colleagues will split the other half.
