Where to watch US election coverage in Germany

Though the US election will take place thousands of kilometres away and in the middle of the night for those of us living in Germany, there are plenty of ways to tune in to the final showdown between Obama and McCain - both from home and in the company of excited party-goers.

International television broadcasters CNN and BBC will both cover the election throughout the night. The German station ARD will also host the program “Amerika Wählt” from 10:45 pm to 5:30 am the next morning, for those who care to follow in German.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Germany will be hosting an all-night election party at the Westin Grand hotel in Frankfurt. The party will feature live CNN coverage, a podium discussion, quiz, prizes and breakfast. Doors open at 10:30 pm. Pre-registration is required.

The Democrats Abroad will also be hosting several events across Germany. In Berlin a public multi-media viewing of the election results and all-night party with live music, DJ and Obama buttons will take place at the Babylon Theatre. Tickets are €3.50 in advance and €5 at the door. Doors open at 10:30 pm. The group will also host events in Munich, Frankfurt, Cologne, Kaiserslautern, Stuttgart, Tübingen, and Freiburg (see link below).

An event of the same flavour will take place in Munich at the Busching Garten. There will be a dinner for early guests at 7:00 pm and the party starts at 9:00 pm. Entrance fee is €10 and includes a welcome drink and pizza buffet. Advance registration and payment are required.
