A nearby resident who gave his name only as Peter told the TT news agency that he heard “several loud shots” around midnight.
He first thought fireworks had caused the noise and thus continued to watch TV with his friends, only to learn later what had happened when another acquaintance informed him that police were blocking off the area.
According to Lars Karsten of the Skåne police department, the 26-year-old victim died from his injuries at 2.16am at the Malmö University Hospital.
As of 3:00am, police had no theories as to why the shooting occurred nor had they made any arrests in the case.
Several witnesses were questioned throughout the morning with some reporting having seen cars leaving the scene following the shooting.
According to Karsten, there have been several shootings in Malmö this year, with most related to the settling of scores between different criminal groups.
“But we don’t see tonight’s incident as connected to earlier shootings and we don’t know what might lie behind it,” he said.
