The paper reported that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been informed of “insufficient personnel as well as information problems” which are impacting the German atomic energy agency’s ability to “pursue strategic security issues.”
Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel is due to comment on the results of the IAEA’s inspection into the safety of Germany’s nuclear power plants at a press conference on Friday.
Experts concluded in their documentation that a lack of staff meant that the Germany’s national atomic agency was limited in its ability to oversee external appraisers, and to evaluate their technical reports, the paper reported.
Additionally, officials complained that the exchange of information between the federal and state level was not happening quickly enough. Nuclear power plant operators also need to improve their act, the paper said, citing expert recommendations for the development and installation of security management systems in the plants and especially, better procedures in older plants.
