The NPD were demonstrating against plans to build two Hindu temples in the area – a Sri Ganesha temple in the Hasenheide and a Murugan temple in the Blaschkoallee.
Udo Voigt, head of the NPD said two temples would be too many.
A group of Berlin Hindus joined left-wingers and other assorted anti-NPD in the protest against the demonstration.
One young man told a journalist from the Tagesspiegel there were up to 7,000 Hindus in the capital but no temple.
The Neonazi Björn Wild, head of the Tor group of fascists was briefly arrested before the march, as he is wanted for resisting arrest, but for legal reasons, he could not be held and was released later in the day.
Leftist protesters and police clashed in a number of incidents during the afternoon, and a car which had a far right sticker on the bumper was set alight.
