Pensioners in long wait for benefits

Staff shortages and a reorganisation of the social insurance office (Försäkringskassan) has led to long delays. 30,000 pensioners have this year had to wait over a month for their housing benefit.

“It can be difficult. If you have a very low pension and then do not receive any benefit with which to pay the rent, then there is not sufficient money,” said Lars Bergendahl at the national association of pensioners (PRO) to Svenska Dagbladet.

Payments of benefits to parents at home with children have also been delayed. In the worse case scenario it can take up to eight weeks before the money is paid out.

“This is a very unsatisfactory situation which we of course regret and doing all we can to solve,” said Birgitta Lindgren at the social insurance office in Kalmar to the newspaper.
