Some 2,000 ground personnel are expected to walk off the job at 9 am following the breakdown of wage talks on Wednesday, according to trade union Verdi.

“If the company’s leadership doesn’t quickly decide to be reasonable, then we’ll call warning strikes at other Lufthansa locations in Germany,” said Verdi leader Erhard Ott.

The union will hold a protest at the airport at 12:30 pm, but air traffic will not be affected by the limited labour action.

Verdi said Lufthansa on Wednesday stuck by its offer of a raise of 3.4 percent for ground personnel and was asking for an extended wage contract of 19 months. Wages would then rise from June 1, 2009 by 2.1 percent.

“It’s brazen not even to offer the people that have earned billions for the company a raise keeping up with the increase in the cost of living,” Ott said.

The two sides will meet on July 1 for another round of wage talks.
