German diplomats in Kabul moved to embassy grounds

Due to the increased threat of attacks in Kabul, all German diplomats based in the Afghan capital have been told they must relocate within embassy grounds from this summer on.

The German Foreign Ministry has begun erecting a multi-storey container building next to the embassy building in Kabul to meet the increased demand for accommodation. Security insiders said it is the only way they can guarantee the safety of German diplomats working in the city.

Previously, numerous German diplomats in Kabul lived in guarded private homes.

In August 2007, three bodyguards working for German ambassador Hans-Ulrich Seidt were killed during an attack outside the German compound. The security situation in the Afghan capital has deteriorated considerably since 2006, DPA reported.
